History
Alabaster Church of God was
organized on July 25, 1971. This was the result of a tent meeting promoted by
the church of God Evangelism Department with the Reverend H. Melvin Massey as
the evangelist. This tent revival was held behind the old Alabaster Post
Office. The church was organized with Reverend Joe Edwards bringing the
afternoon message and handling the organizational meeting with 33 Charter
members. They were: Hobson Adams Jr., Justin Adams, Clell Adams, Irma
Adams, Teresa Adams, Jan Adams Mosier, Laurie Adams, Lonnie Coston,
Steve Coston, Billy Coston, Marie Coston, Gail Coston,
Donnie Norris, Jackie Massey, Malcolm Norris, Michael Norris, Jenny Norris,
Penny Norris, Donald Davis, Donny Davis, Michael Jones, Bobby Buse, Marie
Giddens, Della Jean Norris, Cindy Norris, Donna Norris, Ann Coston, Maxine
Davis, Melanie Davis, Edna Buse, Garland Norris and Ronnie Norris.
The first appointed pastor was
Reverend James C. Prince. He pastored the church from August, 1971 until
December 1971. The pastor and charter members started meeting at the
Siluria YMCA until the church could be built. The first clerk of the
church was Hobson Adams, Jr. Reverend H. Melvin Massey became the pastor
in January, 1972 and remained as pastor until November, 1974. Reverend
Massey and his congregation started meeting in the present church building by
Buck Creek in September 1973. Reverend T.V. Burroughs became the pastor in
December 1974 and remained until December 1975 at which Reverend Massey was
again appointed to the Alabaster Church of God. He returned again in January
1976 and remained until November 1980. In 1980 the new Sunday School Annex
upstairs was completed. In December 1980 Reverend J.C. Hale came to Alabaster
Church of God and was pastor until May 1982. In June of 1982 Reverend Carl
Miller came as pastor and remained until January 1985. In February 1985 Reverend
Melvin Massey again returned as pastor and remained until August of 1995 at
which time Reverend Dave Lorency became pastor. Reverend Lorency
remained pastor until August of 2000. In September of 2000 Reverend Robert W.
Barnes became pastor and remained until he retired in March of 2009. In April of 2009, Reverend
Kenneth Stroup became pastor
